“Make the world work, for 100% of humanity, in the shortest possible time, through spontaneous
cooperation, without ecological offense or the disadvantage of anyone.”, Buckminster Fuller, Planetier
If you’ve been following Planetiers World Gathering since the beginning, you probably know that we are not “sustainability freaks”. What does this mean?
Since our first project, the Planetiers Marketplace, we believe in quality of life for everyone, anywhere, and that’s always been our message. Through the selling of quality, useful, and sustainable day to day products, we wanted to help people understand that transitioning to an eco-friendly lifestyle is easier than most imagine.
Through PWG, we believe that by connecting and empowering creative minds and entrepreneurial spirit, we will promote real change.
In a nutshell, that’s our manifest and what we stand for. If you are a true Planetier, you’ve already read it, but do you know how it all began? Do you know what it means to be a Planetier? We talked to Planetiers CEO, Sérgio Ribeiro, to find out more.
Planetiers are those who take care of Spaceship Earth, our one planet
“The manifest itself is not a document”, Sérgio explains. “The manifest turns out to be why we are doing everything we do on a daily basis and what is the vision for what we want to build. I think the manifest is the root of everything”.
The Planetiers manifest always focuses on a perspective not of what we are going to do, but how we want things to be in the future, to think about how we see a better world, 10 years from now…30, 40, 50 years from now”.
It was easier to put pen to paper, as structuring ideas helped to build a roadmap, the pathway of strategy, and actions towards a better future.
He goes even beyond, by saying that, regardless of what some people might think, the manifest is not operational at all. “It’s a guide, a polar star that knows where the north is, so that’s where we go, and we don’t lose direction”.
Planetiers are innovators, entrepreneus, leaders, citizens.
Real game-changers that have committed themselves to take the wheel of Spaceship Earth and stir our society to a road where everyone flourishes.
Sérgio wasn’t alone creating this vision. “Many people have also reinforced this manifest, from our partners, some of the people that work at Planetiers, and even some ambassadors.”
If he really had to choose, the work of Peace Prize Laureate Prof. Mohan Munasinghe and Global Footprint’s Founder Mathis Wackernagel are top inspirations. “They were people who managed to steer us in a good direction so that what I believed in could be materialized”.
“One Planet” is not a metaphor; it is a description.
It is not a goal, but a recognition of our context.
“The manifest is for all Planetiers”. This is a message that sometimes is not well conveyed, as people tend to associate sustainability to fighting climate change, but, as Sérgio explains, it is so much more than that.
Planetiers guide themselves by the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, which stand for global quality health and education, ending world’s poverty and hunger, promoting peace and sustainable cities, amongst other urgent problems, so present today.
“It is a super transversal thing, and has to be”.
That is why Planetiers care about the quality of life of others – across space, time, and species.
They recognize that there is no alternative to a regenerative future, and they will need it for their own success.
“We dive in everyday life, and we really forget where we are going”, confesses Sérgio. Dealing with problems of this dimension, it is important that Planetiers, including him and his team, don’t lose focus.
Planetiers know that they can always do better
They are the ones who don’t just break the system; they transform it to make it better, fair, and sustainable.
They don’t just limit themselves to do better; they inspire others to become part of the solution.
Planetiers World Gathering is the ultimate connection between the solutions Planetiers are seeking, and investors, scientists, influential people, and society who are doing everything they can to create global change. And, for that, it is the ultimate result of the Planetiers manifest.
“In order to be true to the manifest, we needed to gather people in one place and put them in contact with entities that will make them grow and gain scale. If we could summarize [the manifest] in these two things, I think it is: supporting the creators of new solutions and facilitating the access of these solutions to the general population”.
“This is a project that we believe will help many of the innovators, many of the products to gain market, and they deserve it for their sustainability. We were already doing this with the Marketplace, but what we understood is that this market, bubbling with new ideas and growing so much, needed more reinforcement than just online communication and sales”.
Planetiers look at the whole.
They do not fix one problem at the cost of another one.
That’s why they cannot separate the social, ecological, and economic domains. They are all one.
And no one can be left behind.
“We want the event to be empowering. To empower people to make an impact. And this event is just that: where people who already know where they have an impact have a space to fly and grow. And people who still don’t know how they can have an impact realize how and believe that is possible”.
